1 A less-experienced artist might need to make an underdrawing to act as a guide for the first knife strokes, but here, the main shape is blocked in with color immediately. The artist is working on canvas board.
2 The first layer of paint was allowed to become touch dry and a second layer was added with a pointed knife. The first application of paint was pushed onto the surface, so it is relatively flat. The brown has been applied more lightly, creating thick ridges with distinct edges.
3 By twisting the knife slightly as he works, the artist allows the point to scratch into the paint, thus combining knife painting with a version of the sgraffito technique (see page 106).
